Barbless trebles
« on: June 15, 2013, 07:19:32 PM »
Fishing in our barbless areas, some people have told me that rather than using barbless trebles you should replace the hooks with barbless singles.  Talking about Kwikfish, Alvins, etc., theory being the fish is hooked by one of the treble hooks, then when it bites down, the forward pressure on the hooks will cause the one that is hooked to pop loose.
I'm somewhat skeptical of this theory & would like others' opinions.

Trebels result in more hook ups but singles result in more landed.

Explaining a little better when a fish rolls up on your plug it can cause torque on the treble popping it out. Singles have a wider bite gap typically that hold more meat. A lot of guys run barrel swivels on their hooks too. It lets the fish spin without popping the hook.

O.K., so how do you hook up the barrel swivel?  Split ring to the swivel & then another split ring from the swivel to the hook?

I might be totally wrong but in selective gear areas you have to use single point hooks anyways?

Open eye hooks?  Is that a siwash?  So then you'd go split ring to barrel swivel to hook?

No this is not the same thing.  I'm asking about the barbless requirement areas, the Columbia & tribs where barbless singles or trebles are allowed.  This is not the same as selective gear areas.

Gami big river bait hooks is where it's at. Open eye for plugs and the standard ones for fishing bait. Barbless trebles are worthless.  :twocents:
