colfax
« on: June 20, 2013, 09:17:32 PM »
Drew colfax 2nd deer tag for muzzy this year. Wanyed mayview like last year but was drawn for colfax on my 2nd choice. Oh well. Anyways figured now was the time to learn about the area, i mapped out the area boundries in my map, pretty small area that im guessing is 100%  private. They give out 75 muzzy tags so figure they are having a deer problem and landowners are willing to let you hunt.

I hate to be this guy but if anyone has any info on this area, i am trying to get my ducks in a row now instead of later. pm's welcome Thanks.

yes there are a lot of deer.  you need to knock on doors before wheat harvest.  also talk to people in taverns,  and school bus drivers and anyone who knows anyone.  lots of landowners want the whities shot but like to know who is on their place.    good luck,  mike w

There is written permission land also, get over and get some land secured.  Don't have to worry this year,  me and a buddy have two of the mayview tags.

definitely an easy tag to fill, just wanting a fat whitey doe.  Good luck shouldn't be a problem for you to fill yours either.

Knock on doors, there are a few land owners who own very large farms, some will let you hunt, some won't.  There are several areas that are clearly marked "feel free to hunt" postings in the GMU but stay within those boundaries.  Several years ago I took a deer and a cow elk in the same day in Colfax.  They say there aren't any elk there but I know there are  :chuckle:  I absolutely love that area, wide open fields, just a lot of deer in general.

Take the opportunity to drive the perimeter of the unit if you can; there is a section W/NW of town where that isn't possible, but doing so for the rest of the unit will let you see that the area isn't as small as you think it is.  :)

The area is pretty small but has a ton of deer. You will have to plan on finding some permission, but any sizable piece of ground you can find in the unit will have deer on it.

Its a big area but not all of that area is habitat.  Lots of wide open wheatfields.  The hunt was designed to thin out deer by the highway and town to decrease traffic incidents other deer damage.  We have a few of the same tags in our group this year as well.
It is foolish and wrong to mourn these men.  Rather, we should thank god that such men lived.  -General George S. Patton
