What tools would you need to go about making your own bow and arrows?

A rasp, lots of muscle and a helmet with a full face mask.
You will understand if you read through the entire post.

Up in our neck of the woods this guy makes them.

I'm guessing that all you need is a draw knife and a small wood plane and some wood files... and somethign to hold the bow when your making it. Never built one myself.

In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

Here is a site with some basic "build-alongs" and "how-tos" that might interest you:
http://poorfolkbows.com/oak.htm
http://poorfolkbows.com/arrow1.htm
Also, if you look at "The Bowyer's Bench" on tradgang you will find all sorts of info. on traditional bow building. There is also a good "how to" in the "How To - Resources" section on tradgang, and it is titled "crafting excellent woodies the easy and cheap way."
