Conconully 2nd deer

Hey there fellow Hunt-WA members.

I drew the conconully 2nd deer tag this year.  I typically go for the methow as I have access to more land over there but drew this as my 2nd.  I have access to 2 smaller land plots in this region.  My question to anyone who has been successful with this tag.  Is there much private land, possibly some fiendly land owners etc. PM me if anyone is willing to share some info.  I am going to possibly head up there in 2 weeks and look around.

It's ALL private land.  Deer Area 2016 is private land only per the regs.  The upper valley has some alfalfa (and other crops), and I'd guess those landowners would be happy to have people shoot the does eating their crops.  Others will know better - I'm just a guest up there.

Gee Scotch Creek is right where the fire started and by the second day it pretty much covered all of the areas that are contained in the deer areas.  I was over there for Stampede Week when the fire started and spend a lot of time every year in Omak/Okanogan and wish I could help ya, but I just don't know.  I have friends who live in Spring Coulee and if I get a chance I will try to call today and see if they can give me any info.   

Hey, give the biologist in Ephrata a call.  He has been helpful to me in the past.

Where exactly does the area start and finish ? The Limebelt is pretty much gone from the fire. We lost our cabin in it..

So just out of curiousity and i don't mean anything derogitory.  If the hunting regulations specify that ALL of the hunt unit is PRIVATE...Wouldn't you knock on doors last year or prior to putting in for that tag?  In a way you are taking away a chance for another hunter who has already been given permission.  As far as who owns what land and where its really not that hard.  2 major land owners in the valley and both have their land either leased to an outfitter or have a hunting club with a fee.

Just park your truck on main street and throw some food back there. When the deer jump in you can just whack them on the head, drive them out of town, shoot them, and then tag them.

That is the entire Pogue unit. I'd go up there and hunt it..

He drew a Conconully 2nd deer tag as he stated.  It is NOT the entire Pogue unit.  His tag must be filled on private property only within his hunt boundaries.  Hopefully he paid enough attention before applying to know this.  Going to definitely be harder securing private access this year with the fires.

There are smaller land owners up there and although I have never deer hunted up there it would come as a big surprise to me if you were not given permission to shoot a doe on someone's property. 

How shooting a doe on a smaller property would be stepping on anyone's toes is beyond me.  It should not be of any concern to hunt club members or major landowners, and if it is they can pound sand.  Irrespective of whether you own an acre of land or ten sections, who you allow hunting access to on YOUR property is YOUR business.

yep.. I didn't originally notice the letter denotation on the page then had to go 25 pages further and see what it meant.. I guess I'm more than physically disabled ... so I didn't get drawn until last week they added 100 more "emergency" permits because of lack of habitat destroyed by the fire in an attempt to manage the deer herd.

Did your paper say it was valid only for private lands within the Conconully unit still, or did they open up all the public as well? When does your hunt start for these, or it running now along with the originally selected people who drew?

I have a better idea instead of listening to the usual BS on here, call DeLores Noyes, who is head of the disabled hunters areas, I can't find her phone number, but she is really, really helpful. She might be able to offer you something better. She has done that for me, traded a tag from another area from someone who changed their mind.

The only usual BS on here is you posting chit that isn't correct and having to get corrected all the time so the OP's don't get further confused.  Also, what the hell would be the benefit of calling some gal who is the head of disabled hunters when this hunt has nothing to do with the tag holder being disabled or not?

Elkrunner.....Pretty simple, knock on some doors,be respectful,and give hunters a"good name"....don't know a lot about the area myself, but when that happens I always go back to the basics I was taught 50 years ago. A steak,a soda or brew,with some good conversation. You only get "One Chance" to make a "first impression" as a hunter and as a person....as always...my

I spent this last week up there at the family resort. The area is burned up pretty bad. I would contact Bernie Ranch and see if Joe will let you shoot a doe. They are all bunched up by the cemetery in the lower farm fields. Probably a good 60 does within a 1-2 mile stretch along the road. The Scotch Creek Wildlife Area did not have any deer in it when I checked it out, but that doesn't mean they are not around. Good luck!

I was up there when the fires started (Stampede Week) and it is bad.  With one exception the land holders have always treated me very kindly.  I don't hunt ungulates in that country, but I do hunt up there and have rec'd unsolicited invitation to shoot an antlerless deer even on property that is leased to hunting clubs. 

I hunt coastal blacktails on the west side.  I am from Tacoma, which to people in central Washington means I am from Seattle and am saddled with all the baggage that that rightfully brings with it.  Developing relationships has not been that difficult though.  The ranchers and growers are most friendly.

My cousin ranches right up against The Bob in Augusta Montana and is surrounded by the Broken O, the Sun River Ranch and the Khrone Ranch and his response to hunters who show up on the doorstep is:  if they impress me as being "somewhat human," I go ahead and let them shoot a whitetail doe.  If they behave and after I get to know them a bit then after a few years I will let them hunt.  They get a few pretty nice whitetail bucks every year and if I really like them - the wolves have left them alone the last few years and muleys are getting pretty thick lately.

That has been the same attitude I have run into in Okanogan.  I say, go for it.  The ranchers are going to have to buy hay this year and they are not still in the business by not managing the deer herd when available browse has been burnt off and the deer have no other option than the hay meadows.  They are willing to feed the deer herd, but not at the expense of putting the financial future of the operation at risk.  The herd needs too be thinned way back in order to keep it healthy and if mass starvation is not going to devastate it.  WDFW biologists are going to recognize that and if what I read about additional antlerless tags being made available this year, it only makes sense.

I am born and raised in University Place in Tacoma. I live in Graham now, but spend the majority of my time east of the mountains for work. I do a lot of door knocking in the off season to gain permission to hunt. I hunt South Eastern WA for the most part, but I have hunted quite a bit around Conconully. Enjoy your time up there and good luck...
