Toutle scouting in July
« on: June 28, 2013, 06:25:01 PM »
Won't happen!!  Time is booked :chuckle:  We have two daughters getting married in July.  Hope to make up scouting time in August for the wife's quality muzzy tag, if they don't have it locked up :dunno:  Anybody want to convince me why we should spend time traveling to the north end?  Anybody wanting to share info off the 6600 Rock Creek Road would be appreciated.  It close to home.

Well, for my money it would be good to have some of the state land in the north end scouted. There's a fairly decent chance that Weyco will be closed. Pure speculation, but I'd be ready for both scenarios:
1. Weyco open (obviously preferred)
2. Weyco closed, state dnr still open

Last year, some of the Weyerhaueser properties didn't open until after rifle deer had already started. We did have an unusually dry late September/early October.

I spend a fair amount of time up the 6600 decent amount of elk the only reason I would scout and figure it out is the simple fact the with a dry summer you will have a hard time accessing the north end.  I know there is state land around signal peak but I don't know how to access when weyhauser is locked. Pm me if you want more info

You can access the state land on the north end by the 4100 or maybe its the 4200 even if weyco land is closed.

Managed to get a 4 mile hike in today on the south end.   Dusty, but managed to see a few out feeding.  One raghorn in the bunch.  Not enough to get the blood pumping.  Will be spending more time in August.

I , my son and a good hunting partner scouted the north end Toutle Mtns. Most of the Weyco gates were locked the state land was accessible until crossing over to Weyco land. We made it to the back end of the 3000 line at the park boundry. Lots of horse flies on the ridge/a no show down on the river. Crossed plenty of fresh sign on the ridge so maybe the flies get the elk crazy. Active logging on the south slope at the 4600 off the mainline going up to the top. We chased out a few roads to get a baseline and we will head back down in a week to do more, having never been in that part of the woods.
We are recovering Winston/Mossyrock addicts trying to turn over a new leaf and start the road to recovery.
Will trade notes for notes, we hunt Muzzle loader and have 4 early tags in Oct. Have lots to share and not afraid to use it with discretion of course.

Those horse flys in the toutle are no joke! They bite and hurt like hell!

I had a good scouting trip in early July for my muzzy cow tag. Saw lots of good country, and looking forward to my next trip down there.

Planned a hike in yesterday.  Got to the Weyehauser signed gate to have 2 rigs (one with a quad and 1 with CA plates) setting in front of the gate.  Watched them drive thru and close it behind them. :bash:  Called the hotline and reported it :dunno:  Ended up with a 6 mile hike off the 6600 in the heat of the day.  Got a good workout anyway.
