The sweet sound of elk, heard a bugle yesturday!
« on: July 07, 2013, 11:25:31 AM »
Didn't expect it this early but I know elk communicate year round so I guess it's not too shocking. I was up hiking in the little naches area backcountry yesterday and came to one of my favorite area's, while I was texting a pic of the area to a fellow hunter I heard an elk bugle from the bottom of the basin. 10 minutes later one more, I sat on the ridge line for about an hour and watched about 20+ elk through the trees, only saw one bull but it was a quick glance so no time to size him up. I was surprised to see a bull with a crap load of cows with calves, I'm sure it was a very young bull. We will be camping out overnight there next weekend so maby we can get some pic's posted. Great to hear my first bugle of the season, it was very difficult to leave the area. I heard a total of 5 bugles from that bull in about an hour and half.

I figured some would know the area, I just don't think too many will want to pack something out that far. That bull looks like a masher! My cousin will probably want me to pull a couple of those pic's!!! I love it in that area.

A friend of my wife's, J.T. Wilcox has been hearing bull bugle on his farm in Roy for a couple of weeks.  I heard a faint bugle the other night at my place but mostly a bunch of cows and calves chirping.

I think you will be fine you have to know that area pretty well to figure out those pics, you would have to be dedicated and have some good help(horse or buddies) with ya if you have a big bull tag for that area. Early season is still gonna have lots of yuppies hiking around, too. I got asked if I was hunting just because I had my badlands pack on, she probably wanted to give me a bad time but of course they don't know the seasons too well  :chuckle:

I heard one bugle (kind of a half assed one) about two weeks ago. He did it four times or so. But I've heard them do it in the middle of winter too.

The Little Naches area is a nice place to hunt.  I hunted there two years ago early archery elk and we saw good elk.  We didn't have a bull tag and of course we had the best opportunities at bulls.  Including a nice 5x6.  That's how it goes though.
