Crab pots inthe salmon troll areas grrr!
« on: July 07, 2013, 10:36:28 PM »
While I understand that someone who isnt familiar with an area could mistakenly put pots where they shouldnt it sure is frustrating when they do!! Sure its a free country and you can put pots wherever you please but consider that the guys who fish for kings will be out when its just cracking daylite and when you set your pots right where oodles of boats troll and your lines are to short and the buoys are below the water it sure is maddening to find em with your downriggers! Saturday at Sekiu on our first troll just getting lite and bang three poles hung up on a hidden pot line, what a start to the day! Just venting a little! nwhunter

It's been a while since I've had to deal with it, but I do remember those days. I'd never take a pot, but a few have been moved I will say that. Frustrating for sure.

How was fishing? I was in neah bay all week sounded like the fishing inside was good.

They bouy is underwater :yike:  Id say you would be doing them a favor by taking the pot out of the water and returning their lost pot too them.  Name phone address is supposed to be on the bouy.

Phone # is not required but it is a good idea.

Pots with properly weighted lines should not be a issue in the "trolling area".

He's probably talking about weighted rope or weights on the rope to keep the slack line tight with the bouy, but I don't know for sure. He Scott, how was the fishing? My friend went and said the fish were everywhere, I only saw a couple pic's of dead fish.
“In common with”..... not so much!!

How so is right...how would a downrigger cable, ball, flasher, lure, hook all avoid a pot line under water that can't be seen?

Right, buoys are required to be visible on the surface; line is required to be weighted so it doesn’t float.  If those simple rules are followed boats can easily maneuver to the down current side of the buoy and avoid getting tangled up in the line.

more than likely its people who dont pay attention to the depth and when they dump their pot accidentally in 150 ft of water when they only have a 110 ft of line  :yike: i think it generally guys out there that are complete green to the game of fishn and crabbn, and dont pay attention to certain things  :twocents: all the weighted line in the world isnt gonna keep you from hangn up if you dont see a buoy to avoid  :twocents:

I agree with you when everything is right(buoy lines long enough, buoys are floating and not underwater, etc) but that was not the case with the OP. I guess I misunderstood what you were saying.  The buoy lines he got into were too short so he couldn't see the lines he got into.

Even with weighted lines and visible buoys they are still going to cause problems when dropped in popular fishing spots. It would certainly help though.

I've been thinking about this a bit.....If you show up and folks are crabbing where you planned on fishing....then tough, move on. They were there first and you would simply have to adjust to it. Now, if you are trolling and they drop a pot in front of you or in a spot that there are clearly some boats working then it is a different ball game.

But... If someone drops a couple pots right in the middle of the most popular point at say.. Point defiance, the caves in front of sekui, bald point on the canal, the green can in neah bay... Just seems inconsiderate.
