Help with Montana hunt info...please...
« on: October 17, 2008, 07:04:26 PM »
Me and another guy were going to Montana this year to hunt elk and I got drawn for Mule deer as well.  Anyway, the 3rd and 4th guys that were supposed to be going, were the only two that had actually been hunting over there before.  Well now, guy #4, that lives in MT, can't make it, and guy #3 can only come out for a couple of days.  So now me and guy#2 pretty much will be huntin new, unknown territory, by ourselves.  So, we could use some help from anyone that has hunted the 250, 261, and 270 units around Darby.  My muley tag is in the 250 unit, and the anterless elk tag is in the 270 unit.  I'm planning on concentrating in the 250 unit.  We're heading over on the 1st and planning on getting back here on the 16th.  Not lookin for anyones honey-hole, and I'm really not a roadhunter, so I don't mind walkin' away to get away from other hunters.  Any advise would be greatly appreciated.  I've ordered the hunt district maps, and plan to check it out as best I can on Google earth and other aerial view sites.  Getting the topo program for montana as well, so I can make some maps of the particular areas I want to explore.  Any good trails to hunt that aren't too popular or have too many other hunters?
Not too proud to ask for help...Rick

Hey Rick, if #3 and #4 have hunted it before, can't they give you the areas and directions?
The things that come to those who wait, may be the things left by those who got there first!

you should have no problem getting your antlerless elk in the 270 if you wait until the snow has pushed them out of the wilderness, deer might be a bit tougher but can be some nice bucks if you just get away from the roads.  The 270 hunt will be fun as heck and make sure to bring your camera because you will see some GIANT mule deer bucks, best unit in state of Montana for deer.
