getting winded
« on: October 18, 2008, 10:26:04 PM »
Hey folks, I was out yesterday hunting and set up on the edge of a nice clearing. I sat for a couple of hours when all of a sudden 2 does start blowing. The busted me. I go through some lengths to remain scent free and hand the wind in my face. These 2 were about 80 yards away from me almost horizontal. The wind was steady in the same direction and i had checked it 7-8 times while I was there. My question is this....what is your experience with getting sniffed out by deer who are not in a place to where they should smell you? Another way of putting it might be if the wind is blowing in your face, how far away to your left or right would deer need to be so that they would not smell you. Just curios what some of you guys have experienced. Thanks.

Usually, when they wind you they just run off - time to go, too bad we can't stay.  From what you describe, I think they either saw, or heard you.  I've heard it way too many times ...
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

they might have winded a bear or cat or another hunter  or seen you if the wind was in your face doubt they smelled you unless they came across your trail

If they were blowing and stomping they didn't wind you at all.  They likely saw movement or something they didn't like (shape, skylined?).  They won't stick around if they wind you, they bust out of there, much of the time before you get anywhere close. (watch guys hunting through a spotting scope, deer run circles around them)  If they are blowing or stomping, and you are on the ground perfectly still, they will start to do a circle around you until they get behind you or get the wind and then they are gone.
