nuts?
« on: July 14, 2013, 08:42:09 PM »
Phone is freaking out and won't let me post pics.  But I have a tree that is dropping nuts everywhere In the yard.  The dogs are devouring them.  Is this bad?

yes which kind of nuts?  my one dog loves eating the walnuts from the ginormous walnut tree here ...I might guess you have filberts aka hazelnuts over on the wetside we had lots of those growing up and they are reasonably safe...as long as the dogs dont eat too many

I know you said a tree but they look like hops to me.....

Be curious to see what folks say that are in the know.

those are hazelnuts. I don't think they are toxic to dogs but, being green might give them some wicked squirts? My x- had a plum tree that leaned over her backyard. Talk about epic squirts... dogs loved them green or ripe. I got permission from the neighbor to do some big time pruning that winter.

Nuts generally are not toxic but they are not easily digestible which may result in some unpleasant gastro issues.  I would be more concerned about them causing an obstruction than anything if they are not used to eating them.   I don't know if hazelnuts/filberts become toxic if they get moldy like walnuts, hickory, pecans etc....
