"Best" SW Washington Quality Draw?
« on: August 06, 2013, 10:19:53 AM »
I have been building my points in the quality draws for quite a while. I want to start some preliminary scouting and get somewhat familiar with an area. Before I do too much of that I would like some opinions on which area(s) may be the best for me to spend my time, and which one I will want on my first choice spot for the draw. I have done all 3, archery, muzzleloader, and rifle. I am planning on sticking with muzzleloader for a while. The areas I have been thinking about are Toutle, Mudflow, Margaret, maybe the Upper Smith Creek or Mount Whittier hunts. Any experience or opinions. I have got a few small bulls, spikes, and several cows, I am looking for that one respectable shoulder mount bull now. Feel free to PM me if you dont wanna share with everyone.
The Toutle I have hunted a lot for deer during rifle season, but dont know a way to get good access in the early archery or muzzy seasons.
Thank ya much

Honestly,You probably have a better shot at shooting a good bull just doing a general hunt. Most of those permit only hunts you mentioned are only considered  "Quality" because they limit the amount of hunters or they are during the rut. Not because the quality of the bulls. Heck Margaret isn't even considered "Quality" by the wdfw anymore. It's under bull. Just my two cents ymmv.

I looked at that one, just after spending several years hunting the early muzzy and archery seasons, its hard for me to buy a rifle tag so I can put in for it. I always put in for multiseason tags so I can do it then if I get one. Never been up there before. I normally hunt Coweeman and some of Battleground along the Coweeman border. Whats it like? a lot of timber, a good mix, a lot of cuts, etc?

Similar to most of the stuff along the Crest Trail.

Extra boot leather required so the elk rut there.

I'm into isolation.

There is some there up high.

No points needed, just get drawn for Hancock and you will have the hunt of a lifetime and then some.

You only have three choices for the muzzy quality, Nooksack, Toutle, and Mudflow. I would say if you are familiar with any of the units, go with that one.  Wait, did you say your from Woodland?  Buy a rifle and put in for the Mt Adams rifle rut tag!
