Kitty on a kill
« on: July 27, 2013, 03:20:33 PM »
Went out scouting this morning at a spot near the house where a friend shot a nice buck last year. I took my 6 year old son along. The second spot we hit had a small creek that ran into a meadow. We got about 200 yards from the truck heading down towards the creek. I heard something moving up ahead and snuck up to a big tree with the boy. I peeked around the tree and saw a big cougar sitting back on his haunches staring at me from about 80 yards. He was on what looked like a fresh doe kill. We started making a lot of noise and backed out slowly. The cat didn't budge the entire time. This was the first cougar I have seen that has not been on a dead run away from me. Got back to the truck and decided taking the kid shooting was a better idea for the morning.

Kind of the same scenario my buddy and I had last year for late rifle deer season didn't see the cat but it definitely screamed and growled at us. Wasn't a very good feelin at all

Sounds like going shooting instead of scouting was certainly the better thing to do in this instance.

The boy was super excited about the whole deal. On the other hand I was shaking after we got back in the truck. Explaining to his mother how he became a cat treat would have sucked. He did great. Stayed right on my hip the whole time.
