« on: July 28, 2013, 10:31:06 AM »
My Dad's trail cam took this picture a few nights ago on his property (disregard the date on the picture,he hasn't quite figured out how to set it), I don't hunt bears but
was looking for advise on how big some of you experienced guys think it is, Thanks.

You could go put a yard stick exactly where the bear was for scale

:yeah:  It should be pretty easy to size it up knowing exactly where he walked. I would say average from what I can see.

I think the average size bear is around 200-250 lbs. That's what I would say.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

Camp....I think you are a little heavy on your average...........however.....I would guess that eastside bears tend to be bigger on average than westside bears taken. Maybe because you have a little more open ground...time to judge....compared to thicker stuff....I think on the thicker side of the hill more bears get shot and develop a case of ground shrinkage.....again....only my guess.

I'd put average west side bears in the 100 to 150 range with a few bruisers thrown in.

Also....I'd shoot the one in the pic, no problem.

I always thought 150lbs was about average, but most people call them 200-250. A 200lb bear is not small, and 250 is pretty darn big if you ask me. My biggest bear I thought was over 200lbs... until I saw what a 200lber looks like.

That's a good sized bear.  Well above average.

Average size for blackbear depends on time of year and region.  But in general it's always been thought the average blackbear is between 130-150 pounds.  250 pounds is a dang fine bear!
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

I remember reading, not sure where, that the average bear taken in Washington was 150-200 lbs.  I was talking with an old timer this last week, (has taken 1-2bear every year for the last 50 years) and in his experience, that average is probably about right.

As the the OP, I'd shoot it!

You know how it is ..most people when they see a bear they think they saw a 300 to 400 pounder   :yike: especially if you have not seen many or none at all ...Most bears on the wetside average 100 to 200 ...I would say that's the best way to put it ...that bear in the photo is somewhere between 100 and 150 pounds ....Shoot it  :yeah: :chuckle:
