IMR 4007 SSC Question
« on: July 14, 2013, 06:02:59 PM »
I have a pound that I haven't worked with yet. Looked on Hogdons web site seems to be more of a magnum powder?  Anybody using it? If so. What calibers. Thanks.

I use it and it has been very satisfactory for 180 gr cast and 170 Speer in the 30-30 and 165 gr in the 300 win mag without a lot of tinkering. Its burn rate is right along H380, win 760, and big game. Groups in both rifles were under an inch. Not the fastest fps but above the middle speeds. I weigh mine so I don't know how it meters but it would definitely be better than some of the longer extruded powders. The OD seems to be a bit larger though. Though I didn't get any one ragged hole groups with it but didn't do any fine tuning either. Usually the terrain that I hunt with those loads only allow me to shoot at less than about 250 yards.

I load IMR 4007 ssc with my 30-06 and 22-250. Its performance is phenomenal. I load 55gr of 4007ssc with a hornady 165 grn sst or btsp out of my 30-06. It is very accurate and better fps than the imr4831 that I used to load with.

It's performance depends on the application of your intended use. It gave a gentler push for the softer alloy that I use in the cast bullet in the 30-30. 2520, 4064, 4320, and Tac didn't perform as well as the 4007ssc accuracy wise with the 170 speer in my particular rifle. With the 300 win mag I was trying to reduce the velocity for the shorter ranges I was frequenting to subside meat damage or the to much gun syndrome. I think I have to change bullets for that scenario. It should be a fine powder for the 06 with type cases and the smaller bored 308 case types and their mid range bullets especially with the 22" barrels.

Use it in the 8x57mm with 175gr Sierras with great accuracy. The 338-06 AI with 200gr Woody's.
