High Buck Hunt
« on: August 06, 2013, 12:53:44 PM »
Can somebody give me a quick rundown of the high buck hunt?

You don't need to purchase any sort of special tag for the high buck hunt, correct?

It's simply an earlier 10-day opening for the listed wilderness areas so these can be hunted before the snows come correct?

If I hunt the Glacier Peak wilderness where it overlaps with the Clark or Chiwawa GMUs, I can hunt anywhere in the wilderness for the High Buck Hunt and then hunt it again during general modern rifle season within that GMU correct?

It's pretty safe to assume that I can hunt anywhere within a wilderness as long as I'm in season, correct?

Thanks for the help!

You are basically correct, but it's only "simple" as long as don't really care if you find something to shoot.

Within GPW you are correct. But no, not "within a wilderness" not all of them are included in the boundary of the high hunt.

Basically expect it to be a hiking trip while carrying a rifle

I have done the high mountain deer hunt three years now and LOVE it. One bit of advice is get into shape - because it is a lot of work - and use quality light weight gear. Good luck.

The high buck hunt is a good and a really fun hunt if you plan it right. I have been going on the high buck hunt for the last four years now but have never been lucky enough to harvest a animal on the high hunt but last year two of my hunting partners harvested some nice bucks. I believe one was a 24in wide 4x4 and the other one was a 27in 4x5 with eye guards. I have seen lots of game on the hunts and have opportunities to shot at animals but they have been just not what I'm looking for that early in the season. Me and three other guys pack back in about six to eight miles so after three years of trial and air i think last year we had it down. you do need to get in really good shape not his ok go for a jog once a week. I mean put your pack on put a 25 pound in it and go for a run cross country. start off with 2 miles and increasing in after every few days. we go up to 5 miles and day and after you get comfortable with that then start increasing the weight of your pack. by the end my pack weighs 70 pounds. we do this cause the second year we were on that hunt we had a guy shoot a pretty big bear the first day of the hunt and it took us two days to just get to are camp. I don't think i have ever been so sore in my life and lucky a horse hunt spotted us and was friendly enough to give us a hand and even kind enough to give us a ice cold brew witched tasted 100 time better then normal at that moment. but really good light weight gear and boots and a good set of optics. weather changes from day to day some times but mainly you will be doing a lot of climbing and a lot of glassing but all in said if is by far the funnest but all so the toughest hunt i do each year and I'm going to keep doing year after year as long as they keep having the high buck hunts. hope this help. don't let people deter you away from doing it. if you plan it right and get a small group of hunting buddies together 3 or 4 it should be a hunt you will allways look back at.
