I'm "Outing" Myself: Powerbelts

This is a bullet I pulled out of my bull on the entry side just inside the hide.  100grains of powder 348 grain bullet hollow point all lead.  This shot was a follow up at 220 yard after the bull was already hit at 80 yards with a liver/lung hit.  I have three hits at 220-240 all bullets I found looked like this.  Had another bull I shot at knocked it over dumped it at 55 yards just before dark.  Looked down to reload for 20 seconds looked up and the bull was not there.  I walked up to where it fell over no blood nothing I looked for 3 hours that night nothing followed his tracks never a drop of blood I thought I may have shot high because I aimed right on and my gun at the close is high 3.5" thought maybe I hit his horn.  So the next morning start looking again and as I am walking in I see the same exact bull not a mark on him a little bit of hair looked like it was missing in the upper back just above the shoulder but no blood got a good look at him for 20 minutes. So I hunted him for 3 more days but never could get another shot at him. He lived until the next year and other guy shot him and he told me that there was mushroomed bullet in his upper rip chops never hit bone just stopped in the meat.  That was the end of using powerbelts for me.

I watched my dad shoot a rag horn I called into 55 yards. I watched the bullet hit perfectly behind the shoulder of a broadside elk...blood began to run out...I told my dad u nailed him perfect behind the shoulder..bull staggered a little and walked up the hill as he reloaded. Bull disappeared..silence..we waited 30 min walked down to where the bull was..little blood with air bubbles and rib bone! I thought the bull was just up the hill dead..just then it jumps to its feet and bolted over the hill. Not good on that type of shot. We wait another 45 min to take up the trail..jump bull again! to never be seen again. Looked for 2 weeks for crows, magpies nothing. Power belt bullets. Only thing we can think of is it flattened on impact and penetrated 1 lung.

So if you miss the "sweet spot" the blame is on the bullet and not the shooter? What kind of magic bullets are out there that will make up for a poor hit?

Several bullets manufactured today can make a big difference if you are off the 'sweet spot' by a few inches.

Are the Speer Deep Curls still in good graces as a hunting bullet?  I've been getting decent grouping while sighting in my new Bighorn with them.  Have been intrigued by everyone's positive results with the TMZ's, gonna have to put a few round down range with them.

I personally think the Deep Curls are one of the better production bullets made.  The copper is bonded to the lead and they have controlled expansion.

In the area of what I call "premium" bullets, the old Nosler Partition, Barnes, the Knight Bloodline are great bullets. I prefer the Bloodline, since Nosler is no longer producing the Partition in ML calibers.

How well do the Bloodlines load on a fouled bore?  I know the Deep Curls in a MMP sabot aren't too bad for a second shot, (read as, follow up shot in hunting situation).  I don't expect any bullet/sabot combo to go down the tube super easy after a couple shots, but a buddy of mine was shooting TC Shockwaves a couple weeks back, and after a couple shots were near impossible to load.  I'm not looking for an easy to load range bullet, but rather a reasonably easy to load hunting bullet for a quick follow up shot should the need arise.  Would FFFG and its cleaner burn play an important role here?  Sorry for the newbie Q's, but gotta get learned up, it's getting close to go time!

I use the 295s and 90 grains of triple 7 in my Bighorn.  Groups well.  Taken two shots in the field (98; 117 yards) and they resulted in dead bucks.

Gonna keep using them.

348s over 95 grains of trip 7 in my MK-85. Killed several bucks and watched a few elk die by them, gunna keep using them.

You can see the exit wound on this buck pretty clearly, 100 yards quartering away and it blew through behind his ribcage and exited through the shoulder. DRT

I watched a spike bull get shot at 5 yards with a power belt...wouldnt of killed it either, bullet smashed and broke shoulder...hunter was able to reload and get another shot

There are alot of differant powerbelts on the market today. Has anyone used the new AeroLite Bullets-50 Cal 300 gr. AeroTip.  From what I have read this is a quality non-sabot Slug. I am looking into this slug for my daughter, so she doesn't have to fight with loading sabots. She will be hunting deer and elk with me in 2014 and using a knight little horn.  Here is the link

Haven't tried them, take them out and see how they perform. I agree though I hate messing with sabots too.

AL is a rapid expanding bullets. If you daughter can handle the 300gr AL with a lighter 70-80gr charge, that will work real good on deer.

I've never had a problem with pbs... Shot and killed more elk and quite a few deer along with yotes and a few cougars... Have only shot one elk twice with them... That was my spike 2 years ago... He just wouldn't die... Double lunged and I sat there for five minutes smoking a cigarette.... Reloaded put one in his head....  I would've done it in the first place if I knew it would take that long... Found the bullet double lung high on opposite side of hide.. But those new titanium pbs look sweet as a virgin... Can't afford them though.... So yes.. I like pbs... Even though I don't like cva and own hunt with an X-150.. Before it was cva mind you...

I went to power belts a while back and I'll never return!! I shot three elk at 92 Yards in the sweet spot and ALMOST lost all three!!       Horrable penitration, although i did get pretty accurate with them. I now shoot 300gr Barnes MZ and I'm not looking back. I smacked my elk last year at 110 yards and he didnt go 30 yards. Matter of fact the only reason he went that far is because he rolled down a hill......

any way thats my  What works for me might not work for you, as long as you can retrieve them in the end is all that matters.
