Tucannon Scouting Trip
« on: August 16, 2013, 08:35:09 AM »
I drew a Tucannon rifle elk tag. I've never hunted this area before so I need to do some scouting. I plan to back pack in next weekend for 3 days. Any suggestions on some areas I should hit to get a good idea on what I'm getting my self into. I also plan to make another trip later in the year.
Any info would be appreciated.

Well not like I was when I was 40. I just turned 63 but can still run 4 miles five days a week. Done a lot of backpack hunting and not afraid to bust my butt if I have to. Having MTcook pack me in but like to learn more of that area if all goes south.  http://

If you go down to the SE corner, you can stay at the MT Misery camp ground then drive down the boundary road and there are a few places you can dive off or drive all the way to the bottom. Its some very steep hunting but Ive seen a ton of bulls in there when Im bow hunting in September.

Hunt from the top to the bottom. Have the best glass you can afford. Spent a bunch of time camping with the family there this year, some really nice bulls. Be in the best shape you can be. Have help if needed.

If you have some extra cash, mntcook will drop you off somewhere with his horses and pack your animal out for you. He does supplied drop camps also.
