Lapush tuna

Went out today to see if we could find some tuna. Rough in the morning but once it laid down we headed out after catching some coho. Hit 60 degree water at 24 miles and tried it there but no dice. Got word a buddy boat was hitting some at 32 miles so out we went and water was 64 degrees but spotty fishing . We ended up with 5 nice tuna and buddy boat had 12 all singles for us both handlines and poles worked.  Hit water temp as high as 67.4 degrees. Hopefully the fish get up here soon. Did you find blue water? Even 32 miles is close for up there!

I assume you were probably on the cold water edge (blue/green water).  Get bigger fish there but never much in the way of schools.  If the edge fish are there the blue water fish should be there too!  May just need to get a little further out.  I agree with sirmissalot, 32 miles seems awful close for blue water.  Some years back in the 80's we wouldn't get into blue water schools off the Columbia until 120 miles.

If fishing for myself I prefer the edge fish.  Generally bigger and I think they fight better.  Just never much crazy all rods down type of school action in that water.

I was trolling edge water years ago with green and yellow feather jigs at 8 knots.  Probably 70-75 miles off the mouth of the Columbia.  Deck hand hells, "Hook up!"  I look back from the flybridge and see a 15# coho skipping across the top of the water.  Guess he was having an identity crisis    I would cook dinner on 12 hour trips and that day we had fresh salmon

We got my first ever salmon on the tuna grounds yesterday about 40 miles out of Westport. It was a real nice coho and bit an x rap 20... Which of course had trebles and barbs, it was a native anyhow and was released unharmed. It was supposed to be cohoho's first albacore so he was a little disappointed in the fight until he saw what it was

x-rap 20?  You must be slow trolling for them then, huh?  Pretty cool.  I've never done that!

Interesting!!!  I didn't know they ran that fast.

Ballyhood Albacore All-Star type (some hand made some supplier purchased) are all I've ever run at that trolling speed.  I like to see that fin come out of the water just before the rod tip pounds straight down
