Axe help
« on: August 18, 2013, 05:10:16 PM »
So I been thinking and I need an axe to put in my truck. I plan on using it for cutting wood, clearing small stands of trees and maybe to take care of a few zombies lol.  Would a standard axe be okay? Or would a double headed axe be better? I had an axe with a hard rubber handle and hated it. What kind of wood handle should I get? I dont want to waiste my money again.

thanks

Whats your budget?

Do you want a convex or know how to sharpen one?

axes are a lost skill almost, I know a little - enough to know that you aren't going to find a decent axe in a box store.

One of these days I'll pick me up 3 axes, all for different chores   (doesn't count mauls or splitters)

Hit up a few garage sales until you find a good used axe. My truck axes are found this way. I sharpen them nice, sand the handles nice, and then shoot automotive clear coat over the entire surface to protect from rust etc...  Total project under five bucks.

NO.
Buy this, you wont be dissapointed. Its what I keep in my truck.
Cold Steel Pipe Hawk.
http://www.coldsteel.com/Product/90PHH/PIPE_HAWK.aspx
Has a hammer back. Gives a good weight balance, Replaceable handle,  Blades super sharp but thin (Never had a problem with it yet). Doesn't work GREAT for splitting wood but works GREAT for trimming tree's Ive chopped through 5 inch thick logs in almost no time. You can stick it in the side of a log and use a rock on the back to split.

you can get it on amazon for $25

Thanks for the link

I have used a boys axe before I want something with a bit bigger bit. I seen an axe that was called a hunters axe. The bit looks like its bigger then the boys axe but it has a shorter handle then a reg axe handle.

Good idea I may start hitting them up. With a cleat coat does it affect the shrinkage of the wood in the handle?
