GMU 346 Little Naches
« on: August 21, 2013, 11:49:18 AM »
I'm planning to hunt elk during regular eastern modern firearms season in 346, never actually hunted the area, just visited.
Can anyone recommend some decent spots/areas, or tips/techniques to assist me? I have a partner going along who has hunted there but not in over a decade. I could really use some up to date information on how the area is, that would really help me out. Just in case my partner gets tied up with other stuff or obligations, and can't go out with me, i don't want to be guessing my way through the hunt.
Never hunted eastern side before and have not been successful in elk hunting period. Got the rifle and the equipment, just need some good old fashioned advice on what works and what doesn't.
Any recommendations are welcome and thanks a bunch just for taking the time to read this and respond.

My biggest piece of advice I can give is try to get some maps, look at some google earth images and get out there a few times before you hunt to learn some areas. If your buddy hunted there a while back, ask him where he used to go and go check that out as well. I would call the ranger station before you go and tell them where you are planning to go to make sure it is open with the fires in the area.

Thanks guys. I hope that we are able to hunt the area, given the fires by Cle Elm and such.

I was all over that area scouting yesterday. I didn't see much fresh sign but a lot of the roads where closed due to fire. If you head scouting you should take the drive from Greenwater across Naches peak. I believe it's road 1914. Once you cross the peak there are some amazing spots to glass. There were a TON of fresh huckelberries in there too. We looked for bears but didn't see any at dusk, my guess is morning time you'd see some. There were old elk tracks but nothing from within the last week.

Best of luck this year!

Jeff

I'm in there scouting quite a bit...  staying away until the 8th, then I crawl around for a week. I have not done modern for years, I could show you where the animals typically go before that season, heck I'd come and hunt bear while you hunt your animal.  Lots of people, I use the road hunters to push the animals to me in the mornings.

There was some sign but it looked a few weeks old. It may have been deceiving because of the rain washing out any fresh tracks. Definitely didn't see any live ones... It looks amazing and should be crawling with elk. We'll be back in there scouting the 14th and 15th and will be getting much farther off the trail. I'll let you know what we see.
