Help with amount of powder for elk
« on: August 22, 2013, 05:40:18 PM »
I plan to hunt Roosevelt Elk this Fall.  I've been happy with my Knight, Bighorn, harvesting deer.  But need guidance in the amount of pydrodex pellets are needed to effectively kill a bull at about 50-60 yards using 290 gr barnes spitfires? 100 or 150grains?
Thanks for your suggestions.

I'd start at 100 and you can experiment but I doubt your most effective load will be much more than that.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

100gr is plenty to kill an elk.  That said, it wouldn't hurt to tinker with your load.  Or lose the rotten eggs and try Triple7.  We shoot the Barnes 290s over 120-130 grains of T7 FFF loose and have been pleased with the terminal performance.  Pass-through or stuck in the far hide is typical at modest range (<100 yards).
