Mt Adams/Cispus River area info
« on: September 05, 2013, 01:57:02 PM »
Hi all,
I'm heading over to the area NW of Mt Adams this weekend to camp with friends around Horseshoe Lake and wonder if anybody knows if there are many bear in that area. I've never been hunting down there, but it sounds promising. It looks like a lot of high lakes and hopefully ripe berries above the 4000' mark, especially after this rain. Tonight's going to be running through topos and Google Earth to find land funnels and other points of interest to explore when boots hit the ground and any ideas would help.

Plenty of potential berry pickers too...just a heads up. They've screwed up my elk hunts on more than one occasion.

How do berry pickers taste?  :chuckle:

No, no, seriously...good advice and something to keep in the front of the head before pulling the rifle out of the scabbard.

My concern/warning/reason for mentioning commercial berry pickers was not so you wouldn't shoot one....although that is a concern and something to be aware of. It was more a mention aimed towards the fact that they run the critters out of the country. If you can get in 2 miles or so, you'll likely get away from them. Bears love berries this time of year. Berry pickers love berries this time of year. They're not going to both be in the same place at the same time. I scouted an area down there a few times over the summer a few years ago. Had a herd of elk pegged every time I was there. 3 legal bulls. Went in there opening morning, elk gone...berry pickers everywhere.

Roger that. I'll try to have a few options lined out in the immediate area. I've never come across commercial berry pickers before, but have experienced brushpickers running everything with legs out of an area. I'm just glad to be able to get out and go for a walk with binos and a rifle. My friends will be riding horses up there and hope they can give me some intel after their first ride.

Does anyone know if it's legal to hunt inside the Adams Wilderness?

We have been in there every weekend since opening, Tons of berry's and some sign but no hairy bears yet. Now with this nice rain thing might change for the better. Up near Castle butte I shot a nice cinnamon bear back in 2006 in a huge berry batch. We will be up there this weekend again trying to find one for the wife.  Good luck!!!

I forgot to drop an update earlier in the week. The trip was very nice and there were tons of berries, and about a hundred berry pickers, too. Not much sign, but I heard an elk bugle a coupel of times just after daybreak. Talked to a couple of elk bow hunters and they hadn't been seeing much in the area either. I came back with a purple tounge and a coupel pounds of berries, so all in all a good outing.
