Bear after the kill question.
« on: September 02, 2013, 08:39:38 AM »
I just landed my first bear
I cleaned it up and gutted it, I was wondering, after I pack it out, will the deer, elk, still come around this area? because it smells awful.

As long as there is fresh death smell they may avoid the immediate area, but it won't cause them to abandon the general area.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

I used to deer hunt with a lady that made us drag the deer out whole without gutting it out.  Her theory was that the gut pile scarred off other deer.  Well we didn't know this rule the first morning and gutted our deer right there.  Later that afternoon we shot a deer exactly 30 yards from the gutpile.  Myth debunked!

Congrats on your bear! We left quite a few gut piles in the Pennsylvania woods and shot deer in the same place throughout the season. Usually foxes, coyotes, and other scavengers will have it cleaned up in a day or two.

A coupel of years ago, I was boning out a mule deer out in the middle of sagebrush nowhere and looked up to see 11 does watching me about 40 yds away. Not bear guts, but still pretty stinky.
