Death from infection was very common back then, mostly eliminated now. Infant mortality was quite high back then, mostly eliminated now. Death from starvation was quite common back then, mostly eliminated now. Studies of native Americans that survived to adulthood prior to contact with Europeans shows them to be very healthy and long lived. They just had to survive being young and stupid without antibiotics.
todays life expectancy is shorter because of alchohol, and a lot of the kinds of food of today!
