Zeroing issue, any tips.
« on: September 01, 2013, 08:41:54 AM »
So I got a Traditions Vortek NW Mag. for my birthday last year and am having some interesting results lately when I tried to confirm a good zero. I had sighted it in with Tripple 7 FFG and 348 Grn Powerbelt copper jacket Areo tips. Please dont turn this into a debate on the bullets or gun, lol, I know theres a lot of love/hate about both the gun I have and the bullets. Moving on, I first sighted it in for 100 yards with 100 grains of powder. I was managing consistant 2-3 inch groups with a couple 1-1.5 inch group (these are 3 shot groups). I cleaned it, put it away in the safe, took it out a couple weeks later, fired one shot into the dead center bullseye at 100 and was happy (that day I had other guns I was focusing on). Then yesterday I took it out again. I am hitting consistant still, but its 6-8 inches high at both 50 and 100 yards. I took it out to shoot it more because I couldnt find FFG so I got FFFG and was seeing if there was a difference in my zero. The first shot at 50 was still with FFG and it was 6.5 inches high at 50. After that I was out of FFG and started using FFFG, it doesent seem to matter, I tried 85 grains, and 100 grains of it, the groups all were still 6-8 inches high at 50 and 100 yards. My sights havent moved and are still tight. Any ideas? I figured it would have to be the shooter that was making the difference but with how consistant the groups are, they are just high, I am a little confused. Anything to worry about or just adjust the sights for the high groups and drive on?

If you are getting consentent and repeatable results, I wouldn't give it too much thought, just adjust the sights accordingly and call it good.
It is better to be consistently incorrect than inconsistently correct...

theres a big difference between 2f and 3f. Of course the impact is going to change. Work up the most accurate load with 3f and then adjust your sights to where it needs to be.

Its like reloading with H380 and then going to something else, Its going to change impact.

Here is a god primer on powder substitutes:http://www.chuckhawks.com/difference_black_powders.htm

Bottom line as stated in the above mentioned article:

The message is simple: use propellants approved by a quality muzzleloading arms manufacturer and you'll have no problems, provided you follow the rules of good reloading practices. If you are a muzzleloader, let there be no mistake, you are a reloader. All the freedom and all the responsibility that goes with reloading goes with muzzleloading.
Whatever........
