I was thinking about scouting rimrock this weekend
« on: September 06, 2013, 05:17:14 PM »
Maybe some of the bow hunters on here can give me some honest advice.  I have the "any bull tag" for rimrock on oct 21 and i want to make another trip over there this week, since i have it off from work.  Not sure what to expect with other hunter activity.  How busy do you think it is over there?  Am i pissing people off during there archery hunt?  I just dont want to be "that guy." I wouldnt be doing to much calling, maybe a cow call here and there or some branch breaking but really i just want to get over there one more time before my hunt.  Let me know

Hey Seatown,  I was up there from 8/30 thru yesterday afternoon.  Will be back over again this Thursday evening thru Sunday trying to close the deal.  Fire camp at Airstrip pulled out on Labor Day.  The 750, 1204, 1205 and 1241 rds opened up on Wednesday night.  Many people made a mad dash up the roads to set up camp or go hunting Pinegrass area.  The 1000 rd is still closed above the 750 rd intersection.  We had six guys in camp and only heard a couple bulls all week while up there last week (and many hunters who shouldn't be trying to call, plus too many Hoochie Mama's...LOL).  They aren't vocal yet.

Most of the camps were over off 1202 and 1203 rd below Lost Lake area, plus a bunch of guys crowded up the 1207 rd (North Fork Tieton river).  We did get 4 to 5 inches of rain over there Thurs eve thru Friday morn.  FS guy stopped by our camp Saturday (to see if we new any of the dummies riding quads on FS road 1204 earlier that day) and said it's still closed up 1000rd and they still have fire restrictions in place (i.e., no campfires).  I did get to a vantage point Sunday morning that provided a look up into CM area.  Fire looked like it was mostly out after rains.  Only a little smoke was visible and only one small area appeared to be burning.  Looked like it was coming from area near Phantom Lake.  I think you shoudl be fine by the time ML season rolls around.

Good luck w/that Bull tag.

ET

Thanks et. You're always so helpful. I decided to delay my scout trip until this coming week and let the area clear out.

I ended up going for a couple days with Bryce and found a 350 class bull for you to maybe try finding. Bugled it into eighty yards but ended up winding him. Check your pm.

Just got back from a 3 day hunt in rimrock.  Never have I seen so many hunters.  Never seen the elkthat shook up either.  Labor day jeepers, heavy hunting pressure and the thursday night storm really took a toll on my trip.  I know the area well and struggled to find a couple.  No shots fired.  I would let the woods calm down as long as you can before scouting.  Look for the deep thick nasty stuff.

I was up there for a few days... Super crowded at some of the more popular spots.. All I heard was a bunch of guys calling to each other. Sounded like battle of the bands,  lol.  I spoke with one of the fs guys who said that the elk are hanging out in CM area right now. Best of luck to the tag holders! I'll be back Thursday night.
