Toutle Hunt 2013
« on: September 10, 2013, 06:22:11 AM »
No luck so far, Sunday had a 5x5 at 93 yards before the wind changed and he busted me. Didn't see much else while hunting the south end of the unit. Moved camps up to the north yesterday and glassed two herds come out of the reprod about a mile away at dark, including a stud bull. Put on 30 miles on these boots so far. This heat is definitely making it hard and I haven't been able to get any responses to my calls. Where is everyone having the most success- drainages, big timber, or what? Anybody hearing any St. Helens bulls screaming because I haven't yet?

My guess would be near water as the week goes on, supposed to get warm.  While not in the St. Helens area, the only bull taken by bow hunters I know personally was brought in with a cow call.  Haven't heard any bugles aside from other hunters.  Seems bulls are definitely with or near the cows right now, but nothing really fired up yet.

I have found the elk in the big timber and thick stuff semi close to water....they have only answered when I was within 100-150 yds of them and its been the cows answering them.... the bulls chimed in a few times...maybe another week will get them goin

Yesterday was the first day in the toutle for me with a cow tag.  Saw one herd of 5 with a little 4 point. Got around 80 yards before they left. One other herd was in the thick stuff near a road, I could hear them chirping but could not find my way in and they disappeared.

Need to find dumber cows that like to stand out in the open.  :chuckle:

This morning, got within fifteen yards of a herd of four cows and sat next to them for half hour hoping bull would join but no dice. Then after that got within thirty yards of a solo cow. Waiting for a horny bull to come tail these suckers. Been in the thick wet timber all morning. No noise from any of them yet though.
