Curlew Lake report
« on: August 19, 2007, 06:44:02 PM »
Wow, what a great weekend. We drove to Curlew Lake via Hwy 20 from Colville. On the way there we saw a very nice black bear. One of those bears that has a small looking head and appear lanky rather than fat and round. I've always felt that these guys are the big ones when comparing bears. On the way home we saw a brown cub crossing the road a little farther down in elevation from where we saw the big one.
We got to the lake set up camp got the boat ready for Saturday and Sunday. Real fancy camp ground for us so we enjoyed the flush toilets, running water etc.
Saturday AM we got an early start caught some big mouth bass and then went for a tour of the lake and breakfast when that ended.
Around 5ish we went out again but this time we used the fish finder and deeper holes. Found a nice spot that a fella from Spokane pointed out. We ran the fish finder a few times to get locked in on the deeper part of the area. Anchored and set up our power bait. Bam right off my wife is into rainbow almost one after the other. Meanwhile I'm sitting there like an oaf. So I ask her what the heck are you doing that I'm not. She says that she's off the bottom about 1 to 2 feet, so I do the same and BAM I'm into fish. We had a ball catching these rainbow.
Sunday we awoke to rain, thank god we have rain, and decided to make coffee and eat first before heading out. The older dog did not want to head out so we made a nice bed for her in the cab of the truck and headed out with the pup and high expectations.
I forgot to mention, during breakfast a neighbor came to our camp site and asked some questions about fishing. He had a little boy that wanted to fish but dad had very little gear etc. and a very nice ski boat. My wife told them where to go, gave them some power bait etc.  When we got out to the "hot" spot there they were fishing away. Soon we hear the little boy screaming that he has a fish on and dad is busy trying to net it. The little guy caught two fish...real heart warming to see him get so excited. We gave them two more fish for a meal.
All in all we had a ball.
We'll be going back again but this time we'll also fish for muskie.

Hey you Finnlander, I was there the week after you, we caught a few nice rainbows from the dock at Tiffany's, one was 18 inches and about 2lbs. The rest were 10-15 inches but all were good eating. We brought fresh herbs from the garden and stuffed the trout with them and fresh onion and butter and smoked them on the BBQ over hickory chips! MMMMMMMMMMgood! Also had a big bass feed on saturday, deep fried in beer batter and also in Panko! DELICIOUS! Also saw 4 black bears, one coming into Republic from Tonasket, about a mile west of town, and then 3 more near Iron mnt. I am really looking forward to deer hunting up there this year, it has been about 9 years since the last time, I forgot how beautiful the country is up there!

Later,
