Squirrel ID?

Cat got a squirrel this morning that was inside the house... But I am having a hard time with a species ID... Looks to be a eastern gray to me, but I am the first to admit that I have been wrong before.

The grays don't usually have that coloration on their face.  How big was it?  A mature gray will have a body about a foot long.  That looks like the smaller reddish ones I see with a body about 7" long or so.  I don't know what those are though.

12-14" here is the whole squirrel... Cat had starting eating it... Belly is about the same color as the chin, maybe a little lighter...

Damn thing came through an open window this morning about 6am, there was a terrible racket as it tried to climb around the house to get away from the cat... Finally my cat got it down before I could get it out of the house..

looks like a douglas  squirrel to me, loud little buggers, they are the tell all of the woods, spotted many animals do to squirrels

Glad someone agrees with me! I'm not an expert squirrel identifier lol but those guys are loud for sure

I know dougs can be loud little suckers... Dealt with them quite a bit... They suck to run into out bow hunting...

But we have several of these around and they do not make noise almost at all... Dog will chase them up a tree and they just sit there until the dog leaves... Dougs usually sit there and bark and carry on until the dog left...

The only thing that makes me shy away from douglas is that it lacks the distinct white or light eyeliner the dougs usually have...

Doesn't quite look like the right coloring to me for a douglas squirrel.  Seems too gray to me.  Douglas squirrels, I thought had more brown.......

Negitive ,, I have seen fox squirrels over here on the wetside ...how they gotten here I have no Idea ...I think the picture you posted is a mix ...look at its tail ...it will be orange color ,,,same with his belly ....Just like a pine squirrel but bigger ..

Probably this years juvenile.

Douglas and Red squirrels are smaller than that, from my experience.

That is an Eastern Grey squirrel and you can rid yourself of those things all year in WA state. They are not native and they are far more abundant around towns.

K.I.S.S.  It is simply an eastern gray.  Tamiascurus douglasii is our local "pine squirrel", small, loud, and all reddish brown.  The Western gray is limited to a few small areas in western WA.  The eastern gray has invaded many places, usually starting out in cities and working its way out.  We even have a few here on the island, go figure how they got here as I know no one brought them.

Well I am looking to rid us of the rest of them... They are getting our house, neighbors house and all importantly into my landlords house... So looks like I will chalk them up to gray's and take them out... I am almost positive they aren't dougs as they dont bark, chirp and carry on like they do...

I just wanted to make sure they aren't something protected... Would hate to have a freezer full of protected squirrels... 

Time to go get me some squirrels...

When it comes to squirrels, the slow cooker is your friend.  They can be trapped relatively easily.

Oh I know... I make squirrel stew ever fall... I just haven't seen grays like this one, the coloring is a little off...
