There are officially no deer in GMU 448. 437?
« on: September 19, 2013, 04:10:25 PM »
I've been running around the clearcuts N of Sultan for a couple weeks now. I haven't seen sight nor sign of anything up there. No turds, no prints. Some beds.

Today I ran into a couple friendly loggers, they've been working the area since April and haven't seen a single critter all year. They're pretty sure there's a cougar or two around killing deer and chasing out the rest. :bash:

How's GMU 437 look?  8)

You say you've been running around clearcuts this time of year you should be deep in the oldgrowth far away from the road close to a creek . Theres lots of deer in the 448. We call them ninja deer but you can get to them.437 is slow great in the late season. Pm me if you haven't got a deer before the last weekend

Thanks for the tip! I'm brand new to this, especially in Western Wa. This is my first season of deer hunting, and only my 2nd season hunting at all (got a nice black bear last year).

I've spent a lot of time in the skykomish valley, mostly fishing but a considerable amount of time hunting. Dont know if its just my piss poor deer luck but I've seen more deer in one day in other areas of the state than I have in the 15ish years in that valley.

I get them deer on my trail cam all the time.  good luck trying to kill one of those sneaky deer but it can be done,  just need to be there at the right time and get in deep.

I haven't seen a single animal in 448 this year besides a grouse up Beckler. 15+ years ago the Bear were so thick you couldn't NOT see one at least headed up the roads... 437 is lookin promising, but  bring a blind and prepare to sit, unless you chance upon one moving, I am pretty sure Blackies are simply Nocturnal Ninja Deer... but bring a shotty, Grouse are exploding in numbers this year in the 437!

The deer have been wiped out in 448 best to head north or east. Key is don't kiss and tell.

I think the ninja comment may have been spot on.  I own property in the area (southern edge near the power lines) and see the deer in the early morning when I go to work at zero dark early.  I've never seen them in daylight hours though. My neighbor did catch some cougar on trail cameras on his adjacent property, so the comment about them keeping the population down may be accurate as well.  We've seen a smaller bear in the area very recently, but he runs for the woods like a vampire fleeing the sunlight once the sun fully rises. I grew up in PA and relocated here last year. The wildlife seems smarter out here!

There is alot of deer in both units. Start scouting in mid summer. Find an area with sign, get yourself in a good vantage point and be patient. My favorite time to scout is August. The days are long and the bucks still in velvet. The long days get them out in the open before it gets dark. Most of the time the bucks will still be in the area when general season rolls around but not as visible. The best time to hunt is the last week of rifle season. The bucks are rutting and cruising for does. The buck I shot last year was on Oct 26th. He neck was swollen, he stunk and had a gash behind his left ear from fighting. You have to be patient with blacktails. Once you find an area where they are sit on it. Eventually you'll get one in the open.

I live across the river out of g/b,and I can attest to the fact that there are more cats, bobcats and bear here than I ever seen in the 23 yrs .I live on 7.5 acres and just last week a bobcat came strolling along, not a care in the world until. :IBCOOL: Ive seen one deer on my place in two yrs where 10yr;s ago, I saw them every day...seen 2 cougars, one bob, one bear and multiple yotes,in the last 2 month;s. Also I have access to the land behind me that I can quad to the 6200 rd and have not seen a track, well cat tracks. :bash:
