Proposed rule change to delist the gray wolf in the lower 48

There is proposed rule change by the US Fish and Wildlife Service to delist the two subspecies of the gray wolf (canis lupus nubilus and canis lupus occidentalis) in the lower 48 states with the exception of a listing the Service intends to place on the Mexican Wolf (canis lupus baileyi).   Removal of the gray wolf from the endangered and threatened list is the most important issue facing hunters today.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service got it 100% right.  If I were to write the proposed rule change myself, I couldn't do it better.  It is everything that we could possibly want in Washington State.  They did not propose a new Distinct Population Segment (DPS) for wolves in the Pacific Northwest.  That is huge.  This decision will help reduce future litigation.

The proposed action of the USFWS (Service) to remove the current listing for the gray wolf subspecies, canis lupus nubilus and canis lupus occidentalis, from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife List is the correct one, because neither of these subspecies is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of their range.

I agree with the Service's following conclusions:
•   Wolves in the PNW are a mix of canis lupis nubilus and canis lupus occidentalis.
•   The PNW wolves are not listable because they do not constitute a population under Service's regulations.
•   The PNW wolves are not discrete enough from other listed wolves to merit a separate DPS listing.
•   In Canada, and in the United States, in the absence of the Federal ESA, the existing regulatory mechanisms are currently adequate to provide for the long-term conservation of the two subspecies.
•   These subspecies are healthy and robust and therefore do not merit an ESA listing.
•   This delisting should occur based on the health of these subspecies.

I believe that State management and control of wolves is more workable than a Federal ESA listing in the PNW. Gaining the social tolerance by affected people for the management of the gray wolf will be best accomplished through the Service's immediate adoption of this proposed rule.

It is critical that everyone take just five minutes and submit a supporting comment on the proposal to delist.  It is very easy to use the regulations.gov website and you can post anonymously if you wish.  It is critical that everyone who hunts submit a comment in support of the proposed rule change.

This definatly helps us... I have 2 problems with this however. When they brought the wolves into ID and YNP subspecies  were NOT important. We were told a wolf was a wolf. I HATE thier use of a double standard. I belive that sonce wolves have reached the point were they are not able to be "managed" up north they are trying to shed responcibility of it at this point. Most of us who have been vocal about the detriment of wolves and thier lack of "management" are being bought off.  Give up the fight now that your making traction before we have a chance to infest the southern states with our "Red Wolf".

This week, three public hearings on the proposed national wolf delisting will be held across the country. The first hearing will be held tonight in Washington D.C. On Wednesday a second hearing will be held in Sacramento, California. On Friday a third hearing will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  These hearings are being held by US Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the public comment period.
 
Concerns have been raised that 2 of the 3 hearings will be held in states that are not faced with expansion of wolves in the near future. Big Game Forever will have a representative at each of the hearings to support efforts to restore state management authority over wolves and to protect wild game populations.
 
We encourage American sportsmen and livestock producers to submit comments in support of state management of wolves.
