Colockum anterless tag modern
« on: October 05, 2013, 11:41:36 AM »
I was lucky to draw a cow tag this year for the units 328 and 329, modern rifle.  Not sure where to hunt after the Colockum Tarps Fire this year.  I like to hunt near the summit on the Pettit Road because I'm old and like the flat hiking area.  I only saw 14 elk last year after the Taylor Bridge Fire.  In the years past, I also saw elk coming up from the river crossing the power line road and Brewton Roads.

Anyone been scouting the area near the summit and game reserve?  If so would like some feedback and look for a different area to camp and hunt if necessary.  Thank you,

You should be able to get a cow just about any where up in the colockum, Brewton would be a good place to start, Good luck on your hunt and share your hunt with us.

Don't worry about the Tarpiscan fire.  The wet autumn combined with the warm weather following the rain has caused good grass growth.  There are elk in the burn taking advantage of the new greenery.
Good Luck; get one above the road.

Thank you for the information, I was concerned about the area.  Glad to hear that the elk will have a winter range and food.  Appreciate your help.

We have a few of those tags, and are going to do some scouting in the weeks after M/R deer opens. in 329 it will be all scout since it's SP only..... My bet is you should have no problem finding a cow in your preferred area. Also good to hear things are greening up well down below!

There have been tons of elk all around the Pettit Rd on the east end of the road, was up there yesterday working and saw about 100 head from the main Colockum rd. You will have no trouble filling a tag, as the other guy said , lots of elk in the burns.

That area will be fine, I have hunted the colokum for over 45 years, I even chased them around last year for a while, 5 big bulls and about 30 cows. Majority of the elk went down to windfarms after the nanuem fire and never came back up.

Yes, I saw lots of bulls. I won't put info out on spikes or monsters unless you have a coveted tag. If you do PM me and I'll put you in the area for a monster but I won't put it out in public. Attached is an average one. Took this shot from 60 yards Sunday morning.
