Skokomish fishing permits
« on: October 19, 2013, 09:17:13 AM »
I heard rumor that's natives were charging access permits on the skok and was wondering if there was any truth to this. Never made it down there for the king run but it was just a thought that came to mind. I already know that hunter farms always did for drivable access but was curious about the other issue. Thanks for any help

it's a load of BS, the skoks only own land on their side of the river to the ordinary high water mark(this was contested, and held up in court).  when the state and tribe couldn't reach an agreement(basically they want sport fishermen off the river), they came up with the on reservation permit idea.  thing is, under the permit, salmon are catch and release for the white man!

i barely fish the river any more, too much crowding, garbage and hostility on both sides.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

I'm sure one of the Twiddy boys would sell you a permit (and maybe some elk meat and weed) but if you get caught you are on your own!

I don't get why I would need elk meat and weed but ok. I am just looking to fish off of hunter farms and want to make sure that I don't have to deal with anymore access permits  especially for these Indians.

I was being general in my statement.  I wasn't inferring that you would have any need for weed or meat.  It was kind of a poke at them knowing what sort of outlaws they are.

Which Twiddy boys are you talking about?

The ones in thier early 50's  ;)  They might have changed in the 30 or so years since I dealt with them.

Ya I figured. It is the kind of comment I would make about them but I just want to make sure I'm all legal and do things right before taking a trip down there and getting screwed. If I have to get another permit I'm done fishing that area.

On hunter farms just follow hunter farms access rules and fishing laws and you are good to go.

Years ago before they posted the Rez side of the river I was fishing for kings, on the rez and had one of the Tribal Elders come up and ask if I had permission to fish.  I told him that I didn't know that it was closed and after a little chit chat he sat down, watched me fish and had a beer or two with me.  He was cool about it and let me get my limit but said that I would have to get his permission to fish there again.  He died about 4 months later.

That's what sucks there are very few cool natives still left around.

There is actually quite a few "cool" ones out there, just not with that tribe :chuckle:.

Yeah, especially in that tribe.  It seems as if the "cool" tribal members of the Squaxin Tribe are also becoming extinct.  The heads of the tribe seem to be only interested in the casino, golf course and smoke factory.  Sad really.
