Yeah they're beefy alright!

I whacked a couple yesterday along with a few unfortunate ruffed.  They're much bigger.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

The male sooty's are anyways, the breast meat filled up my frying pan pretty well! The beginning of the season we downed a female and it was no where near as good. Kinda chewy and the flavor wasn't there. I like to think it wasn't my cooking abilities that dictated that but you never know  :)

Either way, better than chicken at the grocery store! Going out again today and tomorrow!

I have to say this is the best year for grouse in a long time.  I am seeing just as many blues as rough and not going very high for them at all.

Very nice!! Was he in the rut?
The only man who never makes a mistake, is the man who never does anything!!
The further one goes into the wilderness, the greater the attraction of its lonely freedom.

Blackjaw, he was at about 2800 feet hiding out in some knee high grasses off the side of a clear cut. I've noticed in these last two birds they were eating some dark blue berries of some sort and leafy greens (Not pine needles or anything along those lines.) There isn't a single time I've been out that one hasn't kicked up in front of me, just this time I had a shotgun in my hands  :)

Sky - I didn't hear him when I was moving into the area so I don't believe he was calling. But then again I was making quite a bit of noise so I may have missed that low sound. Spooked quite easily, if I came up on one over on the east side of the cascades they don't fly far and are pretty easy to get at. This guy kicked up when I was about 15 yards out, glad my cat like reflexes were with me that day!
