Skookumchuck Unit late archery
« on: October 24, 2013, 11:37:15 PM »
I was looking into hunting the Skookumchuck Unit for late archery. I wanted to hunt the side towards Highway 7 and Mineral. I was wondering if that gets just as much hunting pressure as the Tenino side. Any tips? I am in good condition so I am willing to hike pretty deep. Anything is appreciated!

The HWY 7 side is pretty well all gated up, with a few trucks sitting at each gate as well.  At least during modern rifle, you may have better luck during archery.

There is very little pressure on the 7 side during late archery season but as stated above it's all gated up. Pick a road and start walking or biking it, if there isn't to much snow.

:yeah: and look at those roads on google earth, it will help you pick which one you should hike, parts of it are really steep...

Pressure won't be an issue.  Lack of deer will be though.  I've spent a couple hard days up there this week and have yet to see a doe.  I live right here and can glass the rocks from my back porch.  I've got cameras up there year round.  This has been my worst year for deer numbers.  More bears this year than normal.  I still haven't gotten a cougar picture from up there although i know they are there.  There was a bunch of scat up top that had hair in it, but I think it was yote cause there was no scratch marks. I really wish wdfw would help us out and make some changes to our seasons and give the hound hunters the green light to thin the predator population down a bit.
