Big Blacktail
« on: November 02, 2008, 04:50:44 PM »
I've been trying to capture this buck since I first found his match set sheds last spring.  Finally got him on a carefully placed trailcam.  I've posted his sheds before but I've included them again here.  I'm glad to see he's still alive, but I know from experience that tagging him will be near impossible during late bow season.  He was a 3x4 last year with a sharply bladed G2 on the right side.  That blade formed a new point this year.  I found his sheds not 50 yards from where I captured him on my homebrew IR cam.

Any blacktail hunter can probably appreciate how much I'd like to get a crack at him after a year of daydreaming.  I can only hope to be so fortunate.

Enjoy!

Unfortunately, he won't score well.  I haven't scored his sheds  yet.  I don't care - he'd make up for many years of frustration on mature blacktails  :)

I wouldn't care about the score.  I know if I shot that buck he'd get mounted!

Cool buck! Same problem I have with the bigger blackies, they all seem to be nocturnal.

This particular unit I bought from a guy in Iowa who built it.  It's a Sony P32 digital camera and a Bigfoot Controller Board  (http://www.bfoutdoors.com/bigfoot.html) inside a customized Pelican case modified to allow a cable lock to pass through it, making it very secure.  I use a Master Python cable lock.

I love the Bigfoot boards.  They are super quick to program and when you turn them one, they are in "walk test" mode allowing you to quickly check the aim of your camera.  I use the IR cam where I don't want to light up critters that I'm hunting, like this buck.  I also take great care to be scent free and wear nitrile gloves to avoid leaving my scent on the tree or trailcam.

Hope this helps.

He may even be a little taller this year! I wish he would have looked at the camera too. That is a dandy buck no matter the score! Stick an arrow in him Tom!
