reel care
« on: November 04, 2013, 08:44:10 AM »
So I have been fishing tidal water and the jetties. I have salt water reels and want them to last a long time. When I get home they get a fresh water rinse and then blown off. I fish with spinning reels. Is there anything else you guys do as far as a light oil or coating? Thanks for any advise.
PS. Does anyone fish for rock fish in the winter?

I just rinse mine, when I think about it.  Probably not as much as I should.     It would probably be a good idea to grease them internally once a year or so.  I just retired a Cabelas spinning real this year, never greased in the 10 or so years of use, as mentioned, just rinsed once in a while.  I've only retired it because one screw head broke off and the gears inside won't stay together when realing under tension and I can't figure out how to open it up to pull the screw.   :(

If I lived close to the coast, I would fish for them year round.  I don't think many do because planning a trip to the coast can be problematic in the winter with unpredictable weather.  Also, I think many people don't want to pay hundreds (?) of dollars for a limit of rockfish with no salmon or lingcod in it.
