Rabbits with worms
« on: September 10, 2013, 09:01:22 AM »
I want to go after some rabbits but over the years i have heard about worms early in the year that can be an issue. So i have let them all go. I have been seeing one or two a day out hunting. Are worms an issue on western washington? And can you tell easily if they have them when cleaning. Also is it something that would be cooked away. Thanks for any help. Thinking about bringing the 22 s and w revolver out for them.

After thorough cooking, worms are just protein....   :chuckle:

Seriously, I've personally never seen anything in my bunnies to worry about.  I'm sure there are some issues somewhere but touleremia would be probably more of a worry than worms.

Check the liver....... If it's yellow or scarred throw the rabbit away. I've got one bad one in 55 years.
The first bird may get the worm, but it's the second rat that gets the cheese.

:) I generally get more bites on worms early in the morning, before the robins get up.

Saw one at 25 yards today but was trying to get even closer with the 22 revolver. He ran off. If i would have been more patient i think i could have got him but was mainly bear hunting and was more after a bear. But it sounds like if you handle it safely with gloves and cook it well done and check liver you should be ok.

I wondered about that myself, as I'd never shot a rabbit since I was a kid in KY.  Some of them had botflys and such.

I just shot one a couple hours ago.  She was so clean she could have passed for a domestic rabbit, no flys, warbles, worms.  Liver looked fine.

It's in my fridge right now and I'm looking for recipes...

So there's another sample size of one.
