Rut Tracker Westside
« on: November 08, 2013, 06:22:54 PM »
How long do you guys think the rut will last on the far Westside? How does it compare to the rest of the state? I have heard a number of things from people.  I live in King County.   :dunno:

It tapers off the second week of November. I'd say you won't see much rutting activity after the 13th or 14th.

Depends where you are at. I mainly hunt blacktails in SW Washington and have noticed a lot of rut activity from the last week of October, all the way through late rifle buck. I have also seen more rut activity than I care to admit right after thanksgiving, I believe that is near the 2nd rut cycle. Elevation makes a difference too. I have noticed that the lower elevation deer tend to rut a few days earlier than the bucks up around 1,000-3,000'

I've had a very rutted up buck come in to doe bleats and urine 2 years ago on the 5th of December. Another guy I know killed one on ft Lewis New Year's Eve after placing out some buck bomb, buck was rutting pretty hard.

If you get on resident does up higher around 1,500-3,000 ft you will see the rut happening a few weeks later. The BT does that live around that elevation range don't drop there fawns until 2-3 weeks after the does down lower because the weather and feed isn't prime for fawns yet up that high. Since they drop the fawns later and the gestation cycle is the same it only makes sense that the rut is later. Get up much above 3,000 ft and there is too much snow and the deer move down below 1,500 ft and the deer rut earlier so I've found that range to be good a little later. I typically hunt the bottom of the 1,500-3,000 elevation range.
