Cow calling late season
« on: November 13, 2013, 08:11:17 AM »
I'm curious as to what everyone's thoughts are about cow calling during the late season.  Do you find that elk respond well to calls that late in the year and will come into check you out, or does it alert them to your location and send them hightailing?  I'm guessing other cows would respond but will a bull?

I've been elk hunting for a number of years but have never really done much calling until this year and had some success during the early ML season.  Just wondering if the same tactic will still work during the late season.

Appreciate the help!

I haven't had them come into calls during the late season, but the cows will respond and give away their location.  It seems to calm them down when they are alert as well.  I haven't had a big solo bull react in any way to my calls.

they are social animals no reason not to cow call at any time , if your making noise you might as well try to imitate a elk .

According to the number one call master (and my personal hero,Wayne charelton )real short cow calls which could imitate a lost calf is usually the best bet for late season.WHAT HAPPENS IS COWS HEAR A LOST CALF AND NATURALLY FEEL RESPONSIVE,they move towards the call and sometimes the bull will want to intercept her,and sometimes end up right in front of you with all his attention on the cow not his surroundings,Wayne says he has done this several times. My self I've had cows come in three times in the last two years using this method exactly, the problem is there weren't any bulls with them ,I had bull tags and passed, and didn't fill my tag eather year !!!Well top ramen soup for me this winter as I penalize my self for being greedy or what ever,DAM !!!BEST OF LUCK OUT THERE !I'm seriously thinking about late rimrock just for this method of calling!! :yeah:
loction location location ! perzackly !
