Thanksgiving day meals in the woods?
« on: November 12, 2013, 10:49:19 AM »
So what do most of you late season bow hunters do for Thanksgiving dinner in the woods.  I'm thinking about deep frying a Turkey in camp this year. :dunno:

We have went the smoked turkey route a few times and never had any complaints. Pre cooked and smoked so all we had to do was heat and enjoy.

We are skipping thanksgiving in the woods this year unfortunately, but we used to do fried and smoked. Fried is pretty easy (and of course delicious) and smoked takes considerably more work to do in camp. We have done it before hand and its great but I prefer it to be cooked that day and served warm and juicy. As many things you can cook or bake in a dutch oven, stuffing, sweet potatoes, corn bread... makes for the best thankgsgiving ever.

My wife and her family cook the whole meal the week before we head out and seal a meal it all, sliced turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, the works.  Then on Thanksgiving day we come back to camp from hunting a little early, boil some water, put the seal a meals in to warm them up and viola, thanksgiving dinner.  Most of her family hunts with us, 20-25 people total, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and kids.  We take all of the stuff out of our 15x24 wall tent and get everyone inside for the big meal.  It is an awesome tradition that we have done for the 20 years we have been together and her family was doing it for 10 or 15 years before I came around.  It has gotten pretty dialed in over the years, just like being at home only better, friends, family and hunting.  There are only 6 or 7 of us hunting and all the rest are just along to be part of the holiday weekend hanging out in camp around the fire.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

We are doing our Thanksgiving the weekend before since I will be in the woods. I will be eating leftover turkey sandwiches for a few days. With any luck we will be having elk steaks but will probly end up having chili or dinty moore on thanksgiving day.  :chuckle:

I made Turkey soup/stew (I like thick soups) and will have some sweet potatoes and rolls. May eat it in the blind, if I keep seeing deer, waiting for the big buck!

Funny thing is that my folks are hosting their first thanksgiving day at their new house in Oregon.  To bad my dad will be up here hunting whitetails with me.  :chuckle: We always had them at our house in Snoqualmie growing up and had between 20-30 family members per year. When I was old enough to hunt, it became known that I wouldn't be around for turkey day. I think I have been to 2 or 3 in the last 15 years.

My brother and I skipped the family thanksgiving a couple of years back to get an extra day to hunt whitetails. We were focused on the hunt and had no meal plan which resulted in us eating grilled cheese and tomato soup in a freezing tent. Not the best thanksgiving meal but certainly the most memorable.

Stuffed Cornish game hens for me on thanksgiving

Most of the time I spend it alone up in the woods but this year my son will be with me during late season  :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

Might even spend it with other forum members, if we do end up camping together as planned  :brew:

Cook Turkey and stuffing ahead of time.  Make Turkey, stuffing, & cranberry sandwiches.  Wrap in foil.  Heat on dash or heat of a small flame in the woods.   My favorite.  Many good memories of  spending thanks giving by myself in the woods.

Either onion, hamburger and potatoes in a foil pouch in the fire or blackened SPAM on a stick and a baker tater in foil in the fire.
