Pup has a case of diarrhea...
« on: November 07, 2013, 12:59:18 PM »
While i was visiting a friend last week my almost 4 month old pup got into some cat food before i could pull him off and got a case of diarrhea. Ate cat food friday, then sat sun during the day would't poop at all. but during the night he would poop huge amounts of wet poop a couple times a night. I gave him canned pumkin with his meals the third day and he was better within 12 hours pooping normal a few times that day and none during the night. the past 2 days hes been again pooping pretty wet poop"not like spraying poop but just still not healthy poop like he usually did". Would that cat food screw him up that bad? Other than the poop hes been perfectly normal, Still eating 3 times a day "i've put a spoon of pumkin in all his meals" Just as much energy as always, Ive had him out hunting for pheasants for the past 2 weeks and he's got same amount of energy and  running with the older dogs fine. He's drinking plenty of water and seems completely normal except for the diarrhea in the night. How worried should I be? enough to take him to the vet? I mean he is getting better but is it suppose to take him this long?

If it were my dog, I would give him a little more time.  As long as he's not dehydrated it just sounds like his stomach is taking a little bit to get re-balanced.  I probably wouldn't go longer than a week if like you say everything is normal other than the loose stool.

Call your vet and ask them what they think.

Probably just a case of nerves from being in a strange place and getting into strange food.  If it continues after you get him home, and onto his normal diet and routine, take a stool sample and the pup to the vet.  Cats carry a lot of parasites.  (That being said, all my friends know that I don't care for cats...)  :chuckle:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

My dog was having the same issues when I switched from puppy food to adult food.  I even did a really slow transition.  I found out at the vet that he just has a food allergy.  Even with just one bite of the wrong food, could cause an upset stomach and diarrhea for 1-2 days, up to a couple weeks.  Just make sure he's getting plenty of fluids and I'm sure he'll be fine.  You definitely feel bad for them, and at the same time, it's no fun picking that crap up!

Give him 2 Pepto Bismol pills.  It will straighten him right out.  Trust me.
Sometimes when I worm my Shorthair she gets the raging *censored*s.  I give her two pills and it fixes it.  Give it a try.

Brown rice is great for getting dogs' digestive system back on track. Google it; it is known.

plain kefir yogurt works too. Take him to the vet if it gets worse or persists.

Ya I wouldn't worry too much.

On a side note are you planning to pull him off puppy chow at 4months?   That is what Andrea recommended.

My puppy has done a complete 180 in the last couple weeks. She is now a little crack head. Before she was a mellow cuddle bug and didn't seem to have a lot of drive.  I was really concerned to be honest.  Had her out on a grouse hunt in 3inches if snow on Monday.  She was great for the first hour.  Had her nose down and followed scent trails. I was really impressed.  Then she got cold and turned into a needy little puppy.  I can't blame her as it was 28 degrees with a nasty wind chill. Doesn't help that she is an indoor dog and hasn't devolved much of a winter coat.   All in all I think she will turn into a hunting machine.  She picks things up fast and so far training has been a breeze.

How is your pup progressing?

I withhold food. Lessens dehydration if they aren't squirting all the water and food out of their system.
