Winchester water level
« on: November 04, 2008, 05:20:45 PM »
Does anyone know if Winchester Wasteway is still running as high as it was on sunday? and if so, do you have an idea of when it will be going down to its winter running depth?

I don't know but that's crazy isn't it. I think they messed around with both canals too much this year.Frenchman canal is so high the farmer had to move his cattle back. I looked as I was coming home Sunday and the irrigation canal was about 1/2 full so I would bet the waters about the same but that's only my guess.
How did you hunt it last week, boat or on foot. This coming summer I want to get a large Jo then my 8'er. just for the canals.
Now this sounds like hell too. The water was low, then they filled the irrigation canal and shot water down the hill from the ditch to clean out all the weeds and left it that way for a while and the ducks where nesting where the usually do.The they raised the darn water and flooded the nest of a lot of the ducks and left it extra high all summer. I'm talking mostly Frenchman but it was that way on the winchester also. I've only hunted or fished the area for the last 8 or so years.I hunt on foot (jump shoot only if I'm scared)
We need some water in the pot holes for the boat hunters and maybe that would lessen the amount of people on the winchester.
As I said in a different thread there is too much water for the ducks now. They're out in the middle of cattails where there's small ponds and really don't need to leave with no hunting pressure.  I got up a few ducks west of Dodson on the Winchester but if I shot it my dog can not go. The bottoms so bad she can't walk and not deep enough for her to swim. Heck she couldn't get to them thru all the cattails (they're thick) if she was no dry ground.
If I don't help a guy move I'll be going down Friday and if you pm me I can call you if that would help you in anyway. If huntings still a slow as it has been I'll be burning weeds at camp.So look for the smoke signals

I walk in, from the quincy side of I-90. Sunday we saw maybe twenty birds flying, it was slow. Our blind which never has water in it was about two feet full. The amount of hunters is rediculous and to top it off half of them are skybusters who think if they can see it, they can hit it. Its really pathetic hunting right now but im hoping the water level will be down by Tuesday so I can get a few birds.  :dunno:

I lost my post some where so I'll try again.
good luck but have a back up plan.
I think I'll take fishing rod and bottom fish with shotgun near to hand, that should almost double my chances of getting something

55'
Fell free to pm or ask me about the water on Mondays even if I don't hunt I have thing to keep me busy as I want to be down there.
When I was coming home last Sunday I was going West on 90 and I looked south at the Winchester and there was only about a foot left of space for more water. The bridge over the frontage road, I fish for perch there sometimes so I always look.
