I agree, there is no set distance, but I like at least a quarter of a mile in heavily hunted areas. I also like either going up hill or downhill to my area. This eliminates a lot of other guys from getting to my spot. It seems if someone has to breath hard for 2 minutes, they tend to not go there. Not every spot has the option of up or down hill, but in my area there is a lot of peaks and valleys.
Distance also depends on the amount of pressure you are seeing from other hunters. Actually, it all depends on the amount of competition in my opinion. I had a trail cam up that was only 125 yards off of a paved road and I had deer on the cam during daytime. Although it looked promising, I yanked the cam, because I was worried another hunter may come into my set. I moved my set up a quarter mile away in the same area and still have 2 of the same bucks using it, and I feel confident I won't be bothered by anyone else
As far as parking your truck. I would park far enough that the deer are not going to pattern you. Even if your stand is not far from the road, I would get the truck at least a quarter mile away.
Private land is a different story. The deer are accustom to vehicles and people. My biggest buck to date was taken on a piece of BLM land that was land locked by private property. I got permission to access the BLM and set a stand 200 yards from my car. Opening day of 2006, I arrowed a 109 3/8 Blacktail buck.
The main thing is to get out and really get to know your area. If you are going to hunt an area say a square mile in size, walk the entire property the best you can. This will tell you where the deer like to feed and bed. It will give you an idea of what is in the area, where the deer are funneling, and help you understand what the deer are doing.
If you have never stand hunted Blacktails, I recomend Cameron Haines book Bowhunting Trophy Blacktails.
Good luck.
