.338 lupua savage 111lrh
« on: November 27, 2013, 07:11:57 PM »
Well I've been looking at the savage 111 long range hunter in 338 lupua. Haven't heard much on them. NO I don't really have a use for the 338 lupua but I just want one hahaha right now I have a 300 rum that I can hit paper with at 900+ yards all day long but I'm thinking I want a little bigger just for the hell of it hahaha so what's your guys input on this? It's in my price range and I know there are lots of brands that are better or should I say a lot more expensive lol so what do u guys think about the gun?

Most of the guys I know that shoot steel once a month are going to 6.5 calibers. None of them shoot a 338 Lapua.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

I like 6.5's but when it comes to the long stuff, I'll take a .338 bullet over a 6.5 bullet any day of the week and twice on opening weekend.

May be a bit of overkill for punching paper.
Once you go to different calibers, the price goes up, even loading your own.
There isn't an animal on the planet that  will stand up to a .300 mag.
So after that it's about making noise.
Buy it and have fun.\
And by the way there's nothing wrong with Savages, awesome guns, awesome triggers.
Had a few problems with the blind box mags, but that's an easy fix.
One shot. One kill!

For steel at extended range, (1700-2000 yrds) the .338's outahine them all, even as good as the 6.5's are! And if you decide to hunt with it, well, no such thing as overkill!

Have played with the magnum 338's for many years now, from the Win mag to the 340 weatherby, 338-378, the Lapua, an last the Edge since it first became popular. Since then, many have begun to shoot that round , including many on HuntWa, and sing its praise, and is a most sought after chambering in custom long range rifle builds. The Sierra and the OTM in 300 grains have a coefficient that is hard to beat . The Savage in Lapua is a great choice for someone wanting to stretch it out without breaking the bank on a full custom. Go for it!

When I first looked at several Savage's chambered in the .338 Lapua, I wasn't looking to purchase one. I had the .338 department covered. My first thought when I saw the price tag was. If those rifles shoot, for that price it will put it within the budget for many and it's going to take some coin out of some gunsmiths pockets.

They shoot very fine, especially this model. And definetly a tighter built gun then the not- so- popular 110 BA. Put a few rounds down one and shot very favorable groups, hovering between 1/4 and 1/2 moa..buddy's rifles have made some very long first shot hits with theirs

I've been playing with the 338 lapua mag in the savage 110ba.  Those 250-300 grain bullets just pound through cross winds and make the long range shooting easy.  I put a 12 year old kid who had never shot a magnum rifle before and he whacked a gong at 800 yards on his first shot.  He put another 20-30 rounds down range with gusto.

only downside I have seen is the cost of brass.  2.50-3 bucks each.

I am assuming you are reloading.  If not then loaded ammo is unreasonably priced at 5-7 bucks each.  I can load for about 1 $ each (not counting brass)

I'd do a search on snipershide.  More than a few guys on there were disappointed.

I'm having a 338RUM built.  Almost identical performance, cheaper brass, cheaper dies, and a standard mag boltface.

I almost went with a .338 RUM when I had BenchMark build my .338 Edge.  I did contemplate doing a .338 Norma Magnum for a bit. The .338 RUM would be straight forward reloading and a big game animal isn't going to be able to tell which it was shot with when it drops in its shadow. I was going to have Benchmark build me a 7-300 Winchester but I have been really looking at the 7mm Dakota. The 285 Hornady match flat shoot in my Edge and "HAMMER" animals. Sometimes the Berger 300gr Hybrids are hard to find unless you keep your supply up. I shoot allot more of the 285's than I do the 300's both are as accurate as it gets. I have yet to use a 300gr Hybrid on anything larger than a RockChuck.

A 285gr Hornady Match recovered from a Mule deer I shot at just shy of 400yards. Acted like a varmint bullet on the inside, multiple exits. I found the base just under the hide on the off side. Just the way I like it. It flat crushed him! The impact was loud on the quiet morning, sounded like smacking Roseanne Bar on the hindend with a canoe paddle.

I'm a big fan of Savage rifles, but I'm not sold on their 338 Lapuas. I expect .5 MOA from most factory Savage rifles and I just haven't seen that with their 338s. You could build a 338 RUM or Edge on a Savage and use a premium barrel for about the same cost as buying the LRH.

I don't hear much about this round, but does anyone shoot a 6.5 x 47 lapua?
I pieced one together for a friend and it's been great so far. 26" McGowen barrel on a Savage action. It shoots the 130gr Bergers in the .25 MOA range and has shown a lot of potential with the 142 SMK.

long range killer,
savages are a great gun and out of the box one of the best rite now. I think if you were to get the lrh lapua and put a different stock on it and I think you will have a great rifle for long range, shoot up that barrel and have a new barrel put on in what ever cartridge you would like at that time.

Benchmark built up my 270 for me. I still cant believe the ability of this rifle....it's stupifying!!!
