Anyone know how the modern guys are doing in the Winston? Just wondering with all the cow tags given out this year.

I know 5 animals taken 1 cow, 2 forked horns above doubles, 1 4x5 and another small, really small 5x5. All animals were nice big bodied animals.

I saw six bulls being taken out on opening day. But one thing I will say with passion is I will never ever ever ever go near kid valley again had a guy threaten me at about 1:30 in the afternoon even though it was him that walked into the draw I had been hunting all day and proceeded to sit on a log about 60 yards in front of me taking away all of my shooting lanes unless I wanted to shoot toward him. Tooooo many hunters. None of the elk I mentioned were taken near kid valley though I got out of there because it is not worth it when there are knives and high powered rifles involved. I backed down and gave him the spot even though I had a blind put up and my son in law to be was behind me in the next draw with his blind we packed up and left.

I hear ya, I've hunted those parts near 15 years now and every year it gets worse. This last 5 years have been absolutely crazy scary down there. I know last year there was a guy up there who walked in from the east side who got a great big bull taken from him by three guys throwing their weight around. He shot it and dropped it right there and out of no where came these guys and demanded he walk away or there was going to be trouble. He did and it probably saved his life. If you can afford to go somewhere else. I grew up down there so I know alot of area most don't but not so much anymore.

i hunted winston and we got 2 opening day.( see my tagged out 08 post) i saw  absolutely no sign of anything after we got snow on tuesday and as we left thursday out of 4 of us we had cut no tracks in 2 days. we took our elk into morton  monday around noon. and they had plenty of room for our elk. usually they are full up by monday morning. our elk were #14 and 15 in so far. i think it was pretty slow.

I got a 4x4 yesterday. Was up there saturday, sunday, tuesday, and wednesday. SAw elk everyday but did not hear many shots and only saw about six going out in trucks. I think alot of people dont see them up there cause they're too lazy to get out of the truck and expect someone else to push the elk to them.

My partner and I shot a BIG 6x6 in the early archery season. The elk jumped the string a little and the arrow hit back a little farther than we liked, so we backed off for a couple hours to give it time to die. By the time we tracked it down all we found were legs and a gut pile.

Dad killed a really nice 5x5.  He is 44 inches wide and the main beams are 45 long.  The longest eye guard is 16 and the rest are all between 13 and 14 inches long.  Pretty nice bull for winston creek.

broken-arrow, georgia redneck, Screaminreelz its sad to read those kind of reports. Winston's a great unit but a few jerks ruin it for a lot of people and i mean a "lot" of people.

Hunted only the first 3 days due to baby being born. I was into elk everyday. Lots of spikes no legal bulls. One guy in our hunting party saw a 5x5, 4x4 and 3x3 with 20 cows at about 750 yds on opening day. It was a combat zone in there, there was no chance for him to close the distance. He did say he saw only 1 3x3 in the back of a truck the whole season. To many hunters for us we are heading back into the high country next year.

Same here my daughter was born on Oct. 30th missed opening weekend never caught up to the elk just saw a couple of cows and a spike.
