Manastash Late Archery Elk....
« on: December 02, 2013, 04:19:45 PM »
I as far as I know GMU 340 Manastash has never been open for a late archery elk hunt.   What is the basis the WDFW uses to determine which units are open for the late archery hunts.  I suspect that damage control of wintering elk may play a part in the decision of which units should be open for the late hunt.   Does anyone think some year the Manastash unit would be open for a late archery elk hunt?  What are your thoughts?

I believe it should stay they way it is. When the weather strikes the elk move down into joe watt canyon where the game department feeds them. If they were to open it hunters would get in there and get quite a few and game department would claim unethical hunting methods as they have done before in the past. Taneum is open right next door and holds a lot of elk in the late.

Besides, where that photo was taken there is usually about 4 feet of snow this time of year.

I have hunted the Taneum unit off and on for the past 25 years or so and I know how it has been in the past before the concept of "Resource allocation" and having to choose a weapon and what side of the mountains you want to hunt elk.  Just wondering how much time you have spent in the Taneum unit bowguy and how you have done over the years?  I agree with coachcw and the state,  well... Just wants your money and is not interested in your success while in the field.  Bone,  you know your mountains and yes at the west end on Manastash this time of year there can be too much snow.  There is some nice habitat lower down and to the east that could afford limited hunting and away from Joe Watt,  Robinson or the Heart K Ranch.  So my question now is the Taneum late archery elk hunt more about damage control of local elk populations?
