I love when it freezes over. Bust open an area and throw your decoys in. The ducks are limited on open water. It's a lot of work but often pays off well.

I've heard blue food dye mixed in five gallon bucks of water.
I've heard visqueen heavy duty "clear" plastic looks like water or ice to the birds. Apparantly the open water layout hunters drap it over their boats and birds dont see them at all. Might work well for laying out on the thick shore ice.
