Hornady GMX vs AMax
« on: December 08, 2013, 10:57:45 AM »
Picked up some GMX's since it was all that was left on the shelf as I walked by. Just wondering if any one out there has put these bullets to any tests. What worked what didn't work, ext.

Loading for a Remington 700 SPS  .308

Ive tested them out of a 243win. They seem to shoot well but there min expansion velocity limit the range. Ive shot a deer with them and never recovered it do to my scope failing and what I could only believe was a high shot.

In the media ive used the bullets all opened and did there job out to 300yds. They are a different animal compared to the a max and they seem to open and penetrate a lot but shead the pedels to finish punching out the back when it hits harder media like bone.

That's kind of what I've been reading. I shot some test loads the other day. Found that you gotta be careful with the fouling groves hanging up on the case neck and rolling the brass back.  Kind of disappointed in the grouping of the ones I did manage to seat.  Used the loading data for a Hornady SST bullet witch is suppose to be the closest comparison. May have to see if changing the seating off the lands and grooves will change it for the better.  So far not real impressed with my decision. :bash:

I couldn't get the GMX to group worth a crap out of a Rem 700 30-06.  The target I was shooting them at was a paper target stapled to a piece of cardboard.  The cardboard was held vertical by some pieces of wood that were attached to a piece of 2x12 about 18 inches long, backstop was a large old-growth stump.  After firing one string of the GMX, I went down to check the target and found 2 of the bullets sitting on the piece of 2x12.  Perfectly mushroomed, with the pedals intact.  There was very little of the dirt and wood detritus that should have been on them from impacting the lowest area on the stump.  I don't know how they ended up sitting on the wood, but their terrible grouping with several different powders and loads, and the weirdness of finding the spent bullets on the wood, turned me off them.

Now, Amax are a WHOLE other story.  The 168gr shoot better than the 168gr MatchKings in all the 30 cal rifles I've tried them out of
