There's 2 coolers, a horizontal and vertical. Depending which one, the cab might have to come off to access. Easiest way is to pull the cab and do both.

Who the hell designes a truck where any type of fix requires the removal of the cab? This is frigging absurd :twocents:
Where have you been?  We are coming up on the 10 year anniversary of the Ford Motor Company's cab removal to work on a 6 leaker gig.  And they still haven't figured out to shove the power plant forward a couple inches.  But them grille's sure to look purdy!!!   :chuckle:

6 body mount bolts and a few wire harnesses unplugged and it's off.

Otherwise the hood would have to be 15' long.

Then I'm guessing the EGR replacement ain't cheap... oh I love it!

It's only got 42,000 miles, but is just past the 5 years, so I don't think it's under warranty anymore.  It's got a leaky rear main seal too.  They want $1,000 for that by the time you include the oil change.

I can afford the truck, but not sure about the maintenance :chuckle:

Thanks, I'll follow up on the EGR cooler thing.

If you are anywhere near jackelope, he may be able to help in the warranty side of things.  You should give it a shot.

Already tried that, Dave. He's a ways away. I gave him the phone #'s to call to see about getting some warranty assistance. He's barely out of diesel engine warranty. Ford's been pretty good about that sort of thing in my limited experience with them. Hope to see it continue.

I missed the 6.4 part. I still work on 2008 E vans with 6.0, often but down to a science. Still prefer the ease of the 6.0 if maintained.
With Ford folding on full sized diesel vans, seeing more GMC's now and a whole other basket of issues.

I've done 40+ coolers on these since they have came out.  6.7 is a great truck though, and the cooler has an exchangable core and is right on top of the engine.  The squeeze the emissions so tough in these new ones i'm not surprised one bit.  Customer driving habbits are the fault i've found.

As far as the coolers on the 6.4 go, i do not pull the cab to do the horizontal one.  A guy can do it at home, but you'll need good patience.  And pulling cabs isnt necessary on any super duty, I'm doing an engine right now in a 07, pulled it out the front because of a custom sub box built into the back of the cab, blocking the rear two cab bolts.  I've done it both ways.

I'm at Lakewood Ford if anyone in the area has any questions.

I've got a guy that loves to pull cabs and another one that hates to. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Here is some useful info borrowed from Dieselmann's Webpage below:

"EGR cooler inspection for coolant loss:
If a 6.4 PowerStroke has had an overheat condition, or if is exhibiting a loss of coolant with no visible external leaks, the EGR cooler should be tested. Remove the Exhaust Pressure sensor and tube from the EGR cat converter (EGR-OC) pipe. Pressure test the cooling system and inspect for coolant where the EP sensor tube was removed. A gross leak will appear immediately, but a monor leak may take up to 15 minutes to appear. If coolant is present, the EGR coolers need to be removed and bench tested. Additionally, if an overheat condition has occured, the oil filter should be removed and the filter standpipe inspected for signs of melting. Broadcast Message 0287."
